In 2011, Hamrick created The Sleeping Beauty Project for New York City Ballet which debuted that year. She was born on September 27th, 1987 in Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition to her music career, Hamrick has appeared in several television shows and movies. She started her music career in 2006 as the lead singer of the rock band The Paper Kites. In 2009, she released her debut solo album titled “The Waiting Room”. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2012, she released her second solo album titled “Bloodlines”. The album reached number fifteen on the Billboard 200 chart. She has also appeared in several television shows and movies including “Scandal”, “The Overnight” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.

In February 2014, the American Ballet Theatre was touring in Tokyo at the same time as the Rolling Stones. The two groups were scheduled to perform two shows each night at the Tokyo Dome. In 2016, she co-founded the New York City-based contemporary dance company Pivot with her husband Christopher Wheeldon.

Melanie Hamrick began her dance training at the age of four with the YMCA and continued her education at the Ohio Ballet Theatre School. She made her professional debut with the American Ballet Theatre in 1999 as a ballerina in Wayne McGregor’s “The Dream”. Her next role was as a soloist in George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”, which debuted on Broadway that same year. In 2004, Melanie joined the New York City Ballet where she danced leading roles in George Balanchine’s “Oedipus Rex” and Christopher Wheeldon’s “White Raven”.
