Why do you need to drink more water after massage?

by Olivia Anderson

Drinking water after a massage is often recommended for several reasons and it is highly recommended after both Swedish Massage and deep tissue massage:

  • Toxin Release: One of the benefits of massage is the stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems. This helps in the movement of fluids within the body and the flushing out of waste products and toxins. Drinking water aids in flushing these toxins through the kidneys and out of the body.
  • Rehydration: Massaging muscles can stimulate the release of lactic acid, especially if there are knots or tightness in the muscles. Water can help in diluting the lactic acid and other waste products in the bloodstream, aiding their removal from the body.
  • Muscle Recovery: Proper hydration is essential for muscle function and recovery. After a massage, muscles might need to recover, and staying hydrated ensures they get the water and nutrients they need to do so.
  • Prevent Dehydration: The process of massaging can be dehydrating to the muscles. Manipulation of the muscles causes the fluids to be pumped out into the circulatory system and then to the kidneys. Drinking water compensates for this fluid loss.
  • Enhance Benefits: To maximize the benefits of the massage, it’s essential to ensure that all systems in the body are working optimally. Proper hydration supports overall health and wellness.
  • Prevent Headaches: Dehydration can lead to headaches. Since massage has the potential to dehydrate, drinking water can be a proactive step in preventing post-massage headaches.
  • Improved Skin Elasticity: Hydration promotes skin health and elasticity. As massages often stimulate the skin and underlying tissues, staying hydrated can support skin health post-massage.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated in general, not just after massages. But post-massage hydration can be particularly beneficial for the reasons listed above.
