Dell Alienware X17 R1

Alienware, a Dell-owned brand, has long been associated with gaming equipment. Over the previous few decades, the firm has established itself as a gaming industry leader. Many gamers seek to use an Alienware gaming system to take their game to the next level. Is an Alienware system, however, better for performance, or is it marketing speak? We’ll explain this in this article.

So I utilized the Dell Alienware X17 R1 gaming laptop as my primary laptop for approximately a month, doing everything from work to gaming. I played various games on the Alienware X17 R1 during my time with it, including Forza Horizon 5, Call of Duty: Warzone, Flight Simulator, Kerbal Space Program, and others. Throughout my time with the Alienware X17 R1, I was continually impressed by its performance and features. There are some aspects of the notebook that I believe should be improved. In this essay, I’ll discuss what I loved and disliked about the Dell Alienware X17 R1 gaming laptop and whether you should spend Rs 2,49,999 on it. Let’s go.

DESIGN

The Alienware X17 R1 is aesthetically pleasing. The laptop lives up to its “Alienware” moniker and appears to have been plucked from a UFO. With a 17-inch display, the computer is hardly the most compact or portable gaming device available. The Alienware X17 R1, on the other hand, features an eye-catching design. The body of the laptop has a white aluminum-like finish, with a large “17” emblazoned on the flap (just in case you’re wondering whose laptop this is). On the back panel, there is also an illuminating Alienware logo that changes color.

The laptop also includes an LED strip that runs across the vents/ports on the back of the computer. As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, ports on the rear are ideal for gaming laptops because they don’t interfere with the user’s grip. This light on the back may be customized to change color, keep a set color, and more. The laptop has vents on the right and left sides of the lower (keyboard) panel and an RGB keyboard. The screen is bordered by tiny bezels thicker than on other gaming laptops. Still, it does not detract from the overall appearance.

The Alienware X17 R1 is a laptop that looks like it was plucked from a spaceship and has one of the best designs on the market. The backports are great, and Alienware has also included back air vents. However, when attempting to lift the laptop by holding the back, the user will feel extreme heat and discomfort due to the design. Furthermore, the form factor is enormous, and the computer is too hefty for anyone considering carrying it. The 17-inch form factor is already massive (excellent for gaming), and the internals is equally impressive, resulting in a hefty (3KG) laptop with little to no portability.

DISPLAY

The Alienware X17 R1’s display is a 17.3-inch FHD+ panel with a refresh rate of up to 360Hz. Because of its excellent responsiveness, the display is ideal for gamers. The laptop can run games at 120FPS (or more) in Full-HD quality. While the display is quick and bright, such a high-end laptop’s resolution feels a touch low. I was trying the Alienware X17 R1 alongside the 2022 Asus ROG Zephyrus M16. Although being in the same price bracket, the detail in the display of the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 was much more significant than on this one. It’s worth noting that this distinction was only apparent because I was testing two high-end gaming laptops simultaneously. If you’re coming from another computer that isn’t the ROG Zephyrus M16, you’ll appreciate how sharp this display is.

While the ROG Zephyrus M16 display was the best in terms of visual clarity and crispness, the Alienware X17 R1 is far more responsive. As far as portable gaming devices go, this is one of the few that can maintain a high refresh rate while operating solely on battery. Throughout my testing, the Alienware X17 R1 comfortably provided me with over 100FPS even on the charge, which the Asus ROG simply could not deliver. Overall, it’s an excellent and snappy display. The resolution is slightly lower, but the refresh rate is higher; thus, the consumer must decide if they want a very responsive or a highly detailed display.

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY

As for performance, the Alienware X17 R1 is superior. The review unit we received was equipped with an 11th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics processing unit (GPU) with 8 GB of video memory (VRAM) and 32 GB of main memory. The laptop delivered a ferocious performance throughout my time with it. As previously said, I played some of the most demanding games on the Alienware X17 R1. The computer never slowed down, even when I played all these games at their highest settings and frame rates (exact numbers vary according to content on screen).

Of course, gaming is what the laptop was designed for; thus, it specializes in gaming. Users can increase the GPU and CPU clocking speeds to get the most out of the computer. However, the Alienware X17 R1 generates a lot of heat to provide this tremendous performance. Even by gaming laptop standards, this laptop became too hot to sit on. I tried playing a game of Cricket 2022 (nothing too taxing) while keeping the computer on my lap. As soon as the GPU kicked in, the laptop became hot, and I couldn’t keep it on my lap for more than 2 minutes.

I also utilized the Alienware X17 R1 for work, doing all my writing, editing, research, and other tasks. While the laptop performs all these tasks effortlessly (perhaps better than “Pro” laptops), it is not a good work laptop for two reasons. First, there’s the bulky build. With the modern ways of working, a business laptop is supposed to be minor, light, and ultra-portable for users to carry around in case of changing work styles. However, the Alienware X17 R1 is just too large and thick to be carried around by anyone. The second issue is the battery – the laptop’s battery backup is inadequate. Yes, I understand that it is primarily intended for power gaming. Still, if you want the computer to run on batteries for more than a couple of hours, the Alienware X17 R1 is not for you. In comparison, the ROG Zephyrus M16 has a considerably greater battery and portability, making it a better alternative for people looking for a gaming laptop that is also suitable for business.

The charging process is quick. Inside the box, the Alienware X17 R1 comes with a 240W charger. I was unable to calculate the exact time. Still, the Alienware X17 R1 charges quite quickly, and every time I put it on a charge, it was fully charged within a few games, which is excellent for a laptop of this size. The Alienware X17 R1 has an 87Whr battery.

Conclusion

One of the most impressive and fashionable gaming laptops is the Alienware X17 R1. The laptop scores highly in design thanks to its unusual and angular form with just the appropriate amount of lighting. It is also an excellent gaming machine, capable of running practically all games with high graphics and frame rates. The monitor, however, is not the most detailed (FHD resolution), and the laptop is not portable due to its bulky form factor. Aside from that, if you use it for work, the battery drains faster than many competitors. The Alienware X17 R1 is the coolest-looking laptop you can get for $54873005. Still, there are better gaming machines available in this price bracket.
